Darren Shan was my childhood! I preferred his Demonata series to the Cirque du Freak on though 😊 And was a massive fan of Cassandra Clare. I’m an 1989 baby 😮

The fact that the hoverboards work with a belly button ring lives rent-free in my brain. I also have lots of vague memories of the series. One of the vague memories that I like the most is the city that lets people decide how they want to look and I remember how freakish those people looked to tally. And if I had a choice, that would be the city I want to live in.

I'm from Singapore, born in 1988. I grew up with a lot of Western literature, both from UK and the US. I remember reading a lot of Enid Blyton as a kid, both the short fantastical stories about woodland creatures like Brer Rabbit, and also the boarding school series like Malory Towers and St Clare's. My siblings like The Secret Seven, but I only read the Famous Five. Roald Dahl was huge - everyone read Roald Dahl. We also read Sweet Valley kids (lol) and graduated to reading Sweet Valley High. As a kid, I also read this series about clones called Replica (Amy, Number Seven), and the Fearless series by Francine Pascal. The books about Georgia Nicolson are my favourite and I devoured them. We read a lot of The Babysitter's Club, both the main series and the Little Sister series. We also read quite a lot of TV show novel tie-ins, especially Charmed and Buffy. As I got older, I tried to read some classics but would DNF if I hated it. Somehow I managed Sophie's World at 12 because my older sister had a copy? Also read Jane Eyre and the LOTR trilogy and remember not liking them but maybe I can retry them as an adult. I read quite a bit of Lee Child and Dean Koontz in my teenage years and also romances by Nora Roberts and Julie Garwood. Harry Potter, of course, and I also read all of Lois Duncan's books and a lot from Caroline B. Cooney and Judy Blume. The Hunger Games arrived when I was in uni, so did Divergent... so... Oh, I also read A Series of Unfortunate Events but I think I stopped at Book 5 and picked it up again when I was much older, like in my late twenties.

Only one I vehemently disagree with is the Cruel Prince. I’m sorry but I couldn’t personally get past how bad the writing was, specifically the dialogue. It’s one I would enjoy watching an in depth explanation of instead of actually reading it

I agree about the dark themes in children’s lit! I had a very traumatic childhood and grew up in a culture that didn’t allow for questions or exploration of morbidly complex topics. A lot of how I learned that my natural responses to those things were ok was through dark literature. It was incredibly affirming and gave me common language to eventually talk about it. I think without those books I would have continued to think I was broken. Also, living vicariously through characters who were able to fight their oppressors and awful circumstances gave me perpetual motivation to keep moving forward. I would pretend I was them when something happened (dissociation lol). Anyways, I know kids today would benefit from this as we move toward a more repressed society. They need outlets!

Yes, I was dressed as Alice at a B&N Midnight Sun book release party. Also, finally yes, kids are morbid and it's HELPFUL to have books help us work through disturbing revelations and overwhelming emotions. Love your videos!

Fellow millennial here! The Series of Unfortunate Events was def a fave. I was a huge bookworm as a kid and could read books super fast and I'm pretty sure I read the entirety of the series in like a week total because I could read one of the books in a single day. Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables were probably some of the most impactful of my elementary days, but I also read some Nancy Drew and Magic Treehouse, along with some standalones like Ella Enchanted and The Secret Garden. A trilogy that is one of those series that I felt like only I read in middle school was the Gemma Doyle trilogy by Libba Bray. I really liked period books instead of any books set in modern times and the Gemma Doyle trilogy was such an interesting and unique trilogy to me that it has stuck in my head for such a long time. Honestly, I would really love to see your take on the trilogy! I really didn't get into Harry Potter until right before the 7th book release and I remember going to the midnight release even though I was only on book 5 I think at that point. The books/movies never really interested me as a kid but as I transitioned from middle school to high school I got pretty into it.

Was obsessed with it and when she released Hunger Games I was so excited to read a new series from her. Also, did you ever read a series called The Fire Within by Chris d'Lacey? I've never found someone else who has. I also only read the Mortal Instruments and not the rest of the books but I was super into them 😶‍🌫 Also the Children of Green Knowe oh my god my mom read those to me and we still talk about them. I read a lot of British children's lit haha. I also found out apparently Cornelia Funke released sequels to Dragon Rider in like. 2019?? Cornelia, WHAT!

Wow, you are very right about the descriptive stuff. I vividly remember the hot balloon scene in book 2 for some reason. I also distinctly remember some line from the third book about how Tally actively has to fight her own programming every minute of every day to continue being with David. Even though I can’t remember the exact line, the sentiment has stuck with me for years. Also, I have no clue how accurate this is, but I always thought she had sharp teeth like a shark post-special surgery and thought kissing her must be really scary. No idea why I thought that or what in the book made me imagine her mouth that way😂

Kids should get to read about things they are potentially experiencing in life because it helps them frame, learn about and react to their world. Kids have to deal with death and illness sometimes, or are friends with people who do. It's not like they'll never interact with a topic if they avoid reading about it. CW: I am in my early 20s now and by far my worst period of mental health was my early teens. I'm not exaggerating when I say I barely made it out alive. If I had had a book that dealt with self harm and depression in a real and responsible way, I think it would have gone a long way in making me feel less alone and knowing that there were ways to escape or weather what I was feeling. Just that there was a way out. Books are so important for offering a safe way to learn to interact with the world and other people.
